OUR SHINING STAR in Lake Worth, Florida
Under the leadership of
Rabbi Richard Rocklin,
Temple Beth Tikvah n Lake Worth, FL, has been one of SFEJs most loyal
supporters. Thus far, the community of Temple Beth Tikvah has sponsored
seven students, four alone in 2003! Although not a wealthy
congregation, the success of this on-going effort has been largely due
to
Mrs. Sylvia Luckom,
appointed by Rabbi Rocklin to take on SFEJ as a project.
Three or four times a year, Mrs. Luckom holds the
temples fund-raising drive for SFEJ, giving it wide-spread publicity
through the temple newsletter. And three or four times a year,
Mrs. Luckom turns over checks of $10, $18, $25 to SFEJ. Small amounts
accomplishing
great things by people with large hearts!
Dan Runs & Raises
Dan Krassenstein
recently ran in the
New York City Marathon, finishing at 4 hours and 16 minutes. It
was his 3rd Marathon and he just missed his goal of finishing in under four
hours. Even more
impressive: As a result of pledges, Krassenstein's long-distance jog
raised $13,000 for the Scholarship Fund for Ethiopian Jews.
Previous fund raisers conducted by Dan included $2,500 raised from
29 supporters in the 2002 Brooklyn 1/2 Marathon, as well as $2,000
raised by 80 children participants in Temple B'nai Jeshurun's (Short
Hills, NJ) 2003 "Mitzvah Mile" (see article below).
TBJ's Mitzvah Mile & "Operation
Lemonade Stand"
Following in the footsteps of
Ambassador Asher Naim, four children implemented their own plan to
help the Ethiopian Jews in what has become known to SFEJ as Operation
Lemonade Stand.
These young ladies, ages 4 to 8, were apparently so inspired during
Temple B'nai Jehuruns Mitzvah Mile Fund Raiser

that they ON THEIR OWN
set-up a Lemonade Stand a few days later on the street in front of their
home. Olivia and Alexandra Lange, and Melanie and
Rachel Sellinger of Short Hills, NJ, raised $4.20. With their help and the help of over 80 children and their parents being
sponsored to walk a mile around the track, Board Member Daniel
Krassenstein and the congregation of Temple Bnai Jeshurun raised
over $2,000 for scholarships for Ethiopian Israeli graduate students.
THE "THANK YOU" PEN

When SFEJ Board Member Daniel Krassenstein
approached the owner of a Taiwanese firm, Dan found there are many ways
to say "thank you." Mr. Kuo Chiung-Chang, owner of Cheng
Pang Stationery in Taiwan, designed a pen for SFEJ that says "Thank You"
in English, Hebrew and Amharic. It is a handsome
brass writing instrument with a tapered grip for comfortable writing.
Mr. Kuo, a Buddhist, refused to accept payment for these pens; stating
"It is important to our religious beliefs that we contribute to this
worthy cause."
